About This Location
This intersection was one of six locations chosen for Auckland's first batch of red light cameras, activated in June 2018 after the units were installed in late 2017. Locals had been flagging the spot as a problem for years before that. One commenter on the Greater Auckland website pointed out that drivers accelerate up New North Road to beat the red, and left-turners "tend to just miss pedestrians because the pedestrian phase is too short." Blockhouse Bay Road traffic isn't much better, with drivers reportedly pushing through on yellow. Auckland Transport has since run a specific pedestrian safety improvements consultation for this intersection, which tells you something about the ongoing concerns here. Between 2012 and 2017, Auckland saw 92 fatal and serious injury crashes from red light running across all its signalised intersections, and this was one of the worst offenders picked from a shortlist of 75 locations.

How This Camera Works
This is a red light camera located at a signalised intersection in the Auckland region. It uses induction loops buried in the road to detect vehicles that cross the stop line after the traffic signal has turned red. Red light cameras help reduce the severity of intersection crashes, which often result in serious injuries.
