About This Location
Nelson Street is basically a motorway offramp that keeps going. It's a one-way, four-to-six-lane road funnelling traffic from the Southern and Northwestern motorways straight into the CBD, and drivers tend to treat it accordingly. Before this camera arrived, the intersection was the worst of six red light camera trial sites in Auckland, with 4.78 runners per 100 vehicles. During the 2008-2010 trial, offences dropped 79%, turning it from the worst site to the best. Commenters online have described using the pedestrian crossings here as "like Russian roulette," and short light cycles that only let three or four cars through before amber don't help the temptation. The camera was relocated to this spot in early 2019 as part of Auckland's push from 6 to 12 operational red light cameras.

How This Camera Works
This is a red light camera located at a signalised intersection in the Auckland region. It uses induction loops buried in the road to detect vehicles that cross the stop line after the traffic signal has turned red. Red light cameras help reduce the severity of intersection crashes, which often result in serious injuries.
