About This Location

The Newton Road and Symonds Street intersection sits at a complex junction where Khyber Pass also feeds in, right near the University of Auckland and AUT campuses. It's one of the busier pedestrian areas in central Auckland, with thousands of students and bus commuters crossing daily. Between 2014 and 2018, 48 people died in crashes along the broader Symonds Street corridor, and the intersection itself ranks in New Zealand's top 100 high-risk intersections. Auckland installed the red light camera here in late 2019 as part of a batch of eight new cameras at high-risk intersections, partly funded by the Regional Fuel Tax. Around 95% of drivers here exceed the 30 km/h speed limit, and in 2023 someone filed an OIA request after catching a bus running the red light at this very intersection. A petition with over 574 signatures has called for speed bumps, extra cameras, and raised crossings to better protect pedestrians in the area.

How This Camera Works

This is a red light camera located at a signalised intersection in the Auckland region. It uses induction loops buried in the road to detect vehicles that cross the stop line after the traffic signal has turned red. Red light cameras help reduce the severity of intersection crashes, which often result in serious injuries.
