About This Location
Hobson Street is one-way, carrying around 35,000 vehicles a day and acting as a feeder road onto the Southern and Northwest Motorways. Cook Street, meanwhile, serves as a motorway off-ramp exit. That combination of fast-moving traffic and heavy pedestrian foot traffic has made this intersection a real trouble spot. Between 2014 and 2018, red light running across Auckland caused 83 fatalities or serious injuries, and this area saw its share of the problem, with fatal and serious pedestrian crashes on this stretch in 2017 and 2018. Auckland Transport installed the red light camera here in late 2019 as part of a batch of eight new cameras at high-risk intersections, partly funded by the Regional Fuel Tax.

This is a red light camera located at a signalised intersection in the Auckland region. It uses induction loops buried in the road to detect vehicles that cross the stop line after the traffic signal has turned red. Red light cameras help reduce the severity of intersection crashes, which often result in serious injuries.
