About This Location

This intersection was one of the first six locations in Auckland to get a red light camera, installed in late 2017 and switched on for enforcement in June 2018. In the five years before the camera arrived, the intersection saw three serious and four minor crashes. Oteha Valley Road is a fast, straight dual carriageway connecting Albany Highway to East Coast Road, and afternoon congestion here gets bad enough that drivers have been cutting through nearby Library Lane to avoid the lights. Auckland Transport actually trialled closing that shortcut in late 2025 to deal with the problem. An earlier Auckland trial of red light cameras between 2008 and 2010 showed a 43% reduction in red light running and a 63% drop in related crashes, which is part of why this intersection was picked for the first rollout.

How This Camera Works

This is a red light camera located at a signalised intersection in the Auckland region. It uses induction loops buried in the road to detect vehicles that cross the stop line after the traffic signal has turned red. Red light cameras help reduce the severity of intersection crashes, which often result in serious injuries.
