About This Location
Matakana Road was the first location in New Zealand to get average speed cameras, with the pair going live on December 1, 2025. They cover the 80 km/h stretch between Clayden Road and Wright Road, and the results have been dramatic. Before activation, about 12% of drivers were speeding. After, less than 1%, with 99% compliance. Only $9,030 in fines were issued in the first three months, which Waka Kotahi considers a success, not a failure. Rodney has the highest rate of deaths and serious injuries in all of Auckland, and Matakana Road has seen multiple fatal and serious crashes in recent years, including a two-death collision near Wright Road. But the cameras were placed here as a preventative measure, not in response to a specific crash history. Waka Kotahi project sponsor David Strong told the Rodney Local Board that the stretch met physical site requirements for camera placement, including line of sight and road geometry. Not everyone's a fan. Local board member Geoff Upson (who once ran over his own dog as a result of his own speeding) has called it revenue-raising on a road where limits were "reduced inappropriately", despite the positive impact on speeding the camera has had. Someone smeared one of the cameras with black paint in February 2026. It still worked.

How This Camera Works
This is an average speed (point-to-point) camera in the Auckland region. It works with a partner camera to calculate your average speed over a distance. Unlike spot speed cameras, you cannot simply slow down at the camera location -- your average speed over the entire corridor must be within the speed limit.
