About This Location
The southern end of the SH5 Tumunui corridor sits near Waimangu, around 2028 Thermal Explorer Highway, roughly 18 kilometres from its partner camera near the Rotorua end. Together the pair forms a point-to-point corridor that clocks your average speed across the whole stretch rather than catching a single moment of speeding. It became operational on May 12, 2026, one of two Bay of Plenty sites added as part of NZTA's national expansion to 17 new average speed camera locations. The road here runs through the volcanic plateau past geothermal features, with a 100 km/h limit on a rural two-lane highway that carries plenty of tourist traffic between Rotorua and Taupo. A June 2024 speed survey found 47 percent of drivers were exceeding the limit on this section, well above what NZTA considers acceptable. The corridor is signed with standard Safety Camera Area warnings at the entry point, giving drivers time to adjust before the average speed measurement begins.

How This Camera Works
This is an average speed (point-to-point) camera in the Bay of Plenty region. It works with a partner camera to calculate your average speed over a distance. Unlike spot speed cameras, you cannot simply slow down at the camera location -- your average speed over the entire corridor must be within the speed limit.
