About This Location

This is the Rotorua end of the SH5 Tumunui average speed corridor, positioned at around 126 Thermal Explorer Highway. It's paired with a second camera near Waimangu, about 18 kilometres south, and together they measure your average speed across the corridor rather than catching a single reading. The pair went live on May 12, 2026, part of NZTA's wider 2026 push to add 17 average speed sites nationwide. A June 2024 survey found 47 percent of drivers exceeding the limit along this stretch of the Thermal Explorer Highway, a big number for a road that carries a steady mix of locals, log trucks, and tourists heading between Rotorua and Taupo. NZTA's own research puts the expected reduction in deaths and serious injuries from average speed cameras at 48 percent, well above the 20 percent estimated for fixed point cameras. Local tourism figures have welcomed the change, with one saying she's "chuffed" about cameras that will help keep speeds down on a road plenty of visitors don't know well.

How This Camera Works

This is an average speed (point-to-point) camera in the Bay of Plenty region. It works with a partner camera to calculate your average speed over a distance. Unlike spot speed cameras, you cannot simply slow down at the camera location -- your average speed over the entire corridor must be within the speed limit.
