About This Location
East Coast Road at Redvale holds a grim distinction: it was the very first location in New Zealand to get a pole installed under the $10 million fixed speed camera expansion programme back in September 2017. Police chose it because the stretch had been "the scene of many horrific crashes over the years," and the record since hasn't exactly improved. A fatal car-versus-bus collision in August 2021 killed the driver. A head-on crash in September 2020 left two people trapped, one in critical condition. Three more were hospitalised after a serious crash in October 2019. The road's wide reserves and straight layout make 80 km/h feel slow, and drivers tend to push it. One Reddit user reported getting pinged at 96 km/h through the zone, while another bluntly called drivers on this stretch "aggressive."

How This Camera Works
This is an average speed (point-to-point) camera in the Auckland region. It works with a partner camera to calculate your average speed over a distance. Unlike spot speed cameras, you cannot simply slow down at the camera location -- your average speed over the entire corridor must be within the speed limit.
