About This Location
Camera A is the new half of East Coast Road's camera setup in Redvale, activated in July 2026 as part of NZTA's 17-site average speed camera rollout. It pairs with the road's existing camera further along the road, which has been in place since 2017, to measure how long vehicles take to cover the distance between the two rather than clocking a single moment of speed. East Coast Road earned its reputation the hard way. When police first picked this stretch for a fixed camera back in 2017, national road policing manager Steve Greally called it "the scene of many horrific crashes over the years." Not much changed enough in the years since to keep it off NZTA's 2026 priority list, which is built from crash history, traffic volumes and the proportion of drivers exceeding the limit. The road's wide grass reserves and long straights make 80 km/h feel slower than it is, which is part of why speeds here have stayed stubbornly high despite years of enforcement.

How This Camera Works
This is an average speed (point-to-point) camera in the Auckland region. It works with a partner camera to calculate your average speed over a distance. Unlike spot speed cameras, you cannot simply slow down at the camera location -- your average speed over the entire corridor must be within the speed limit.
