About This Location

This stretch of SH2 between Waitahanui Lane and Otamarakau Valley Road has a rough history. The local fire chief reported attending several serious crashes here before the camera went in, and traffic volumes on this part of the highway had roughly doubled in the three years prior to installation. It was the only Bay of Plenty location chosen in the 2018 national rollout of 33 fixed cameras at high-crash-risk sites. In its first month of operation, it racked up 264 fines worth just over $29,000. But the crashes haven't stopped entirely. Multiple fatal collisions have occurred in the area since, including a head-on between a truck and car in July 2024 and a logging truck crash in November 2023. Locals are split on whether the camera helps or just collects revenue, though a Te Puke mother whose family was badly injured in a 2012 SH2 crash called it "a positive thing."

How This Camera Works

This is an average speed (point-to-point) camera in the Bay of Plenty region. It works with a partner camera to calculate your average speed over a distance. Unlike spot speed cameras, you cannot simply slow down at the camera location -- your average speed over the entire corridor must be within the speed limit.
