About This Location
The newer of the two Matata average speed cameras sits near Herepuru Road, by Murphy's Holiday Camp, on SH2 between Otamarakau and Matata. It went live in May 2026 as the exit point of a point-to-point corridor, paired with the older fixed camera further along SH2 that was converted to handle the entry side. A June 2024 NZTA speed survey found 45 percent of drivers on this stretch were exceeding the limit, which is a big reason the corridor made NZTA's list of 17 new average speed sites for 2026. Rather than clocking your speed at one spot, the system now times your whole run between the two points and calculates the average. NZTA says the aim is to reduce the number of people travelling over the limit here and lower the risk of a serious or fatal crash. Signage warns drivers well before the first camera, so there's no excuse for getting caught out.

How This Camera Works
This is an average speed (point-to-point) camera in the Bay of Plenty region. It works with a partner camera to calculate your average speed over a distance. Unlike spot speed cameras, you cannot simply slow down at the camera location -- your average speed over the entire corridor must be within the speed limit.
