About This Location

Kahikatea Flat Road links Waitoki and Dairy Flat in rural north Auckland, and since early April 2026 it's had its own pair of average speed cameras, one of 17 new sites in NZTA's national 2026 rollout. Camera A sits at one end of the enforcement zone, timing vehicles against Camera B further along the road to work out an average speed rather than a single-point reading. NZTA picked this stretch after a June 2024 speed survey found roughly 74% of drivers exceeding the 80 km/h limit, with average speeds near 90 km/h, and after three crashes here between 2018 and 2023 left people with serious, potentially life-changing injuries. It's a quiet rural road that doesn't look like a typical camera site, but the crash and speed numbers put it on NZTA's priority list alongside far busier corridors. NZTA expects average speed cameras to cut deaths and serious injuries by around 48%, a figure based on overseas results and the early data from Auckland's first site on Matakana Road.

How This Camera Works

This is an average speed (point-to-point) camera in the Auckland region. It works with a partner camera to calculate your average speed over a distance. Unlike spot speed cameras, you cannot simply slow down at the camera location -- your average speed over the entire corridor must be within the speed limit.
