About This Location

Camera B is the exit point of the average speed pair on Pine Valley Road, Dairy Flat, sitting near the road's roundabout a couple of kilometres on from Camera A at the Kahikatea Flat Road intersection. Together the two cameras time how long a vehicle takes to cover that stretch and calculate an average speed for the whole corridor, so slowing down just for the cameras doesn't help. The pair went live in April 2026 as one of NZTA's 17 new average speed sites nationwide. NZTA picked the corridor after a June 2024 survey found 74% of drivers over the 80 km/h limit here, averaging close to 90 km/h, and after three crashes between 2018 and 2023 left people with serious, life-changing injuries. NZTA Auckland and Northland director Steve Mutton said average speed cameras are more effective than the traditional kind at cutting deaths and serious injuries, expecting a reduction of around 48%. Each pair of cameras like this one costs roughly $2 million to install, covering the poles, roadside cabinets, communications gear and civil works.

How This Camera Works

This is an average speed (point-to-point) camera in the Auckland region. It works with a partner camera to calculate your average speed over a distance. Unlike spot speed cameras, you cannot simply slow down at the camera location -- your average speed over the entire corridor must be within the speed limit.
